I really did not like this movie the first time I watched it. It had to grow on me. After it sank in and I watched it a second time, I was amazed at the characters. They are all so tragic. As Clint Eastwood seems to do, he has given us a cast of haunted characters, people who are tormented by their past and can't escape from it. People are so complex in this film- which is wonderful, and explains why their relationships are so simple. There are no 'triangles'. Nothing to muddle the beauty of the tragic human experience. I think this film is wonderful. A film with an unhappy ending, to give us as Americans, something to think about. Only in America do nearly all films end with happy, fun, all loose ends tied- endings. This is a refreshing change. A beautiful film. I think they all should have won the Academy award. Their performances were absolutely astounding.
